I actually feel a little sorry for the guy - he's probably under the impression that Mike is a bastard and that he needs to protect her. Ick.
That's what his (over)reaction seems like to me, but I'm assuming an irrational explanation in the absence of a rational one. It's possible there is a rational one, Macharius's suggestion maybe, though the fact that the guy knows and is familiar with Mike and his character should preclude that, unless he's thinking with the wrong head
