There are many benefits that are granted by a legal marriage, such as legal rights between the individuals, tax benefits and insurance benefits. All of those instances require a legal marriage (or extensive paperwork can be filed in some cases), which requires an actual marriage along with marriage paperwork as many states also do not recognize "Common Law" marriages.
