But I can see that logic - I think that ties in with love, or lack thereof, and not just fear of a unpredictable environment. People look for a way to feel close to someone, and sex frequently becomes that tie. Also, they are bored.

yes, it is a sensible evolutionary trait to have - breed enough to keep the species alive but not enough to overbreed what a region can support.
