I'm still on the fence about getting one, but Nebhead has invested a lot into this site beyond just money. If you don't believe me, just check the reported bugs and fixes page. If he feels that advertising won't cover the costs (economic and opportunity), then it's reasonable to charge users for some of the functionality.
