Marriage is no longer a strictly religious institution. It is a legal institution with legal benefits and costs. Even if presided over by a judge, priest, whatever, it's not a legal marriage unless the proper legal papers are filed and approved.
Because of this, religious beliefs should not be considered when determining the legality of a marriage. That's not a matter for the legal system. That's between the couple and their religion and no one else.
The press for Gay Marriage is NOT to force gay marriage down the throats of churches. It's to make them LEGAL, with all the associated LEGAL ramifications. That's not a matter for religion to decide.
