I do realize that the concept of a road has been around for a while. Regardless though, the standard "road" in the US is designed for an automobile. It cannot support cars and bikes both efficiently AND safely. The car either slows down to the speed of the bike for the duration of their similar route, or else one of the parties must exit the given roadway. The bike has to go off the road, possibly hitting rocks, holes, etc, or the car must cross the center lane to whatever extent, risking collision with cars on the other side.
Most modern roads are not designed for bikes, and, thus, it's my opinion that bikes shouldn't travel on those.

The problem is that a bike is MUCH cheaper than a car, so if a person can't afford a car but can afford a bike then they're going to go to work (school, uni, wherever) on that. And they'll have to use the roads that aren't sensible for them.
Completely agree with you about the need for better infrastructure & set up for bikes. I disagree that this means that bikes shouldn't be on the roads that exist. Needs must & all.
I got screamed at by a motorist while riding my bicycle today
