That's always upsetting. You just have to remember that some people are simply arseholes, and...

...that it reflects badly only on them, not on you.
Clearly he is the dumbass. Bikes are not generally allowed on the pavement, because otherwise they would be mowing down old ladies at 25mph.
Clearly he is just a shithead who enjoys yelling at defenceless vulnerable road users, even when there's no good reason to. He will have a sad life with no friends, and end up fat because he drives everywhere, whereas you will be fit and healthy, live longer, and (assuming you don't also act like an arsehole) have friends throughout your life who enjoy your company. Pity him.
Did you get his licence plate number? Might be an idea to call the police, and exaggerate the situation a little so that it sounds like he was endangering you. It won't go to trial or anything, but if he gets a call from the police it might scare him into being a little more considerate.
Then when the guy passed me he yelled "Get on the sidewalk where you belong, dumb ass!"

In my town, where I ride, there is a car sticking out and blocking the sidewalk in every 3rd driveway. It's not possible to use the sidewalk. But more importantly, my town has a population of 7,500. It was Sunday at 11pm. There were literally (and I know it for a fact because the town is so quiet I could have heard them) no other moving vehicles in a 1/2 mile radius, and no parked cars on the road I was using. I could have driven 3 18-wheelers side by side on the road, and this idiot yells at me. It took no effort for him to pass me.

That was offensive to cyclists. People who think like you are why so many of us die. *NM*
