I think there should be retribution for the atrocious World Cup refereeing Sidious Send a noteboard - 28/06/2010 08:09:30 AM

We all know that Sepp the Tyrant has said that he will never allow technology to become part of football so long as he's not in the grave. Fine then, let the world's biggest sport become the last to evolve.

It struck me once again yesterday how massive these blunders can be.

It took me a week to recover from Kaka's sending off. It's one of the great travesties of the World Cup. They should suspend the Ivory Coast player, and fire the referee, but in the mean time one of the greatest of Brazil's strikers is sitting out a critical period for his team.

If one looks to yesterday's two second round matches, you can see that both are filled with controversy. Firstly, the England goal was clear, and yet it was disallowed. The fact that the Germans, whom I supported, won by a fair margin is not as relevant as the fact that the decision may have interrupted an ascending trend by the English team, or struck a critical blow to their morale. In the second game, Argentina scored a goal that was markedly off-sides, and the linesman was in the perfect position to confirm this. After a near mutiny on the field, the referee conferred with him and they spoke over their microphones, and still allowed the goal. There's not a single soccer expert who isn't outraged by this incident that undoubtedly struck Mexico to the core.

The list goes on, and includes de Rossi's laughable dive that actually gained him a penalty. Italy should have been out of the tournament a week prior to their final game, but managed to steal a draw.

There are too many serious consequences riding on a game that is being dominated by human error, and even the supposedly qualified people they choose seem to miss the most blatant incidents. Being a referee or linesman is tough, but they're meant to be experts and it is their only function, yet they continuously make serious errors.
