England is a talented team in the sense that Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney and Terry are world class, and most others are only a level or two below that. But when Rooney is out of shape, as he was during this tournament, scoring just seems too hard as there are few decent offensive alternatives. When Gerrard and Lampard don't have a Torres or Drogba in front of them to be lethal in the box, then not only do they have trouble getting that decisive assist, but there's also less room and more defenders' attention for them, making their long-range shots more difficult. And true, you don't really need two players like that at the same time.

And Terry was good in the first three games, but shockingly bad today. I don't know what was wrong with him all of a sudden. Upson, well, there's a reason why he's only third choice at that position. And Johnson is a decent player all-round, but at times a liability defensively, so that only works if the central pair is rock solid.

An even better comment from the English commentators was when they said something like "We're down 4-1 and our keeper is the best man on the team, that's just sad".

I am pleased that the goal differential was more than that one goal. It should have been 4-2. - 27/06/2010 04:55:35 PM 690 Views
