If someone else lost them, then I don't know what was wrong with your parents.
If YOU lost them, then your parents probably didn't want to buy another set because they expected you'd lose those, too. My parents were sort of like that, and it taught me to take care of things if I wanted to keep them.
Case in point: of the dozens of board games that I have, the only piece I am missing is one German fighter plane from the original 1982 version of Axis & Allies, and I suspect my brother is responsible for that loss. There are no water marks, sticky spots or stains on any of the boards.
So, at least in my case, I got the lesson.

As for the board games missing pieces, none of mine are (although I have to use a separate piece of paper when playing Clue because we went through the pad that came with the game before I was even old enough to understand how to play it).
A possible exception would be Risk, but I say that only because the entire thing, box and all, is just gone. It was there before I moved, but is now nowhere to be found.

In that case, you may overestimate how many of the "people you know" know those abbreviations.

Probably because checkers can effectively be played with mismatched pieces.
