I actually agree, Free Markets should be cleaning up the oil spill. Libby Send a noteboard - 10/06/2010 02:57:09 AM
If BP is on the hook for this mess (as well as Transocean, Mitsui, and Anadarko to name a few), then why weren't firms like Goldman Sachs, Citibank, JP Morgan (who bought Bear Stearns only after being guaranteed a ceiling on Bear's liabilities) on the hook for the mess THEY caused (which is MANY MANY times worse)? Instead, the only question in Congress was how soon they could start feeding from the taxpayers' teats.

Instead of asking these companies to pay for the damages, we should be supporting a govt. sponsored (i.e., taxpayer) bailout for Big Oil, like we did for Big Money.

Indeed, I don't understand why government should clean up the mess - literally - caused by a private company? Why should the federal government use it's naval ships, coast guard, and its resources in bailing out BP? I say remove those ships all of them, and all government agencies helping out with the cleanup withdraw their resources. They should stand out of the way and let business be better, smarter, more efficient, and more effective at solving problems. After all, Conservatives and Libertarians seem to have an equal faith in the infallibility of business and the complete fallibility of government. Let BP deal with the full Public, Financial, and Environmental consequences of their actions. Honestly, I think that is a good idea.

I'm just curious to why all the Conservatives and Libertarians on this forum are not complaining that the government is bailing out private industry again? C'mon guys, why so quiet?
