So my friend and I have signed up as medics for the Soccer World Cup. Hell, I'm an anaesthesiologist. I shouldn't be near the field. I do gunshots, not knee ligament injuries. Still, it's an opportunity to be 'around' during the World Cup, and I get time off.
So my friend and I (he's also a doctor), were summoned to greet the Portuguese team as they came off the plane. Well not greet, but be near in case one of them felt ill after they got off the plane or something. The whole Portuguese team walked past us, and Ronaldo was first. He even gave my friend and I a friendly nod, then progressed to customs. Useless hero worship? You bet!
Ronaldo is about as tall as I am, and I'm pretty average I think. I found this surprising. I expected the Zeus of football to tower above me.
Anyway, on the weekend we passed by the Brazilian team and asked if there was anything they needed. They have their own medics but we liase and do other things to merge them with our health system if they injure themselves (like get an ambulance there asap if they stub their toes). I got to see Kaka and some other players from a few feet away. Good times.
This is baseline medic stuff, and my friend and I should be studying for our speciality exams. But this has been a great week
when you see only the darkness, know the light will soon return
I was within a foot of Christiano Ronaldo today
