The interior and foreign ministries had appealed the case, saying it was for parliament to decide on such matters.

This is the telling sentence that I suspect most people will miss. The executive branch of government didn't want it, the legislative branch hasn't done anything about this and so presumably doesn't want it either (although whether they'll dare to reverse the decision is another matter). It seems this is entirely the work of the judicial branch. Which means someone must have started court proceedings in order to force the government to strip these people of their citizenship. Who were they, and what was their title and interest to sue?

It's unfortunate that Egypt hasn't signed up to either of the UN Conventions on Statelessness, as this move will undoubtedly make a lot of people stateless. However, Egypt is a party to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which includes the right to a nationality. This move seems to be designed specifically to deny Egyptian nationality to children with a Jewish parent; if the Israelis do the same, that'll be a lot of stateless children.

Stateless adults and stateless children mean more refugees in Western Europe. Just what the world needs...

yeah stripping someone of their citizenship is pretty harmful. Doing it as a political statement is a low blow
