I speak from pretty extensive experience that Immigration systems are pretty much screwed up, overcomplex and not well thought out rather a lot. I've gone through this with both the US and Canada and they're both pretty messed up in their own ways.
I hope you get someone with a brain who can sort it out.

"That's it! SOMEHOW!"</Homer>
The irony is that my fiancee works for a firm that deals exclusively with immigration law. That has been some help, but apparently gross incompetence can only be mitigated so much. Yet again I say, and no longer about US immigration only, that legal immigration needs to be greatly eased and illegal immigration better enforced, because current systems effectively encourage illegal residence by penalizing the law abiding and ignoring the criminal. Seems a dubious method of selecting your future populace.

One thing I learned in the USA was never to say "we met on the internet" to immigration officials.
