So I've tried keeping fish recently. I've got a nice 10 gallon tank, gravel, fake plants, and some rocks. I've established the tank, added nummy bacteria and kept the temperature at optimum levels.
However, I've been having trouble keeping fish alive. I've tried Platties and Goldfish with no success.
I currently have a filter that's rated for 10 - 20 gallon aquariums. I have noticed that when the fish are in the area near the intake for the filter they tend to have to swim harder to get away from it.
Is it possible that the pump is too powerful for the tank? Does anyone have any suggestions?

also, platies and goldfish need a much larger tank to be happy. a 10g is good for smaller fish like some tetras (cardinals, glow lights, fish of similar size etc) or if you prefer more colorful fish, you could keep bolivian rams or tanganyikan cichlids but the latter will require keeping the water at a higher ph than is normal.
i actually quite like keeping one single male betta with a medium sized school of colorful tetras in a 10g. about 15-20 cardinals with a betta and a small pleco like a bristlenose would be a perfect setup and not too much work for a beginner's level tank

I used to own the Shedd Aquarium but since selling it I haven't had a pack of manta rays to my name.
