If arrested and put in an interrogation room should refuse all conversation and request a lawyer. You should NEVER engage in small talk and answer any questions or ask any questions. You should repeat again that you would like a lawyer. Again, do NOT engage in any small talk.
You should also never, ever go down "voluntarily" if asked to for an "interview" without a lawyer. You should have the officer write his contact information down, inform him that you will contact your lawyer as soon as possible and have him/her set up an interview time when everyone can meet.
The police spend hours and hours learning "soft" interrogation techniques that are designed to use small talk and conversation to get you to reveal more detailed information. They are crafty. That is the interrogators job. You are not in the interview room because the police want to know how your family is doing, whether you are thirsty or not, what church you go to, who your friends are, or anything else.
Often they start with techniques like conversation and small talk after they have informed you of any rights to have a lawyer present in order to get you to overlook the fact that you don't have to say a word to them without one present. And if one thing is for sure, once they you talking about irrelevant bullshit they will guide you nice and easy into talking about what is relevant (to them).
Be smart about "interviews". The police are not your friends in such a situation. Ever. Always ask for a lawyer and talk about nothing else until your lawyer is there and can find out what they want to talk to you about.
