Well, yeah, but the alternative is to be deceptive, if not outright dishonest.

And that was just for a gathering, not a wedding (much less my own).
Have you thought about finding a country that doesn't require in order for people to marry there (a) one of the parties to live there and (b) special permits for people subject to immigration control? There's bound to be one somewhere in Europe. You could take professional advice on whether or not already being married would help you to get a visa (there could be rules to help keep spouses together, but conversely a quickie wedding abroad could make them smell a rat). If so, go to your chosen country, get married in the town hall, and have a party in Norway later. You'd be apart for some of the time you were married, which would suck, but it's an improvement on the current situation (neither married nor together).
Good luck, whatever you do.

Setting aside ethical concerns, it would probably prejudice a visa application if caught. But, yeah, on Lenes first trip here Seattle customs was VERY interested to hear she was visiting people she met on the internet; sadly, I wasn't there, due to more insanity booking flights, but my impression is that they weren't sure anyone so trusting of strange Americans online should travel unescorted.
Depending on how things go in the next few months, all options are on the table, as far as I'm concerned, and unless I've badly misunderstood her m'lady and I are in agreement here. For that matter, two different people at UDI have asked why I didn't go there without a visa (which I can do for up to ninety days, as I imagine you're aware) get married and then apply for a family reunion visa, during which time I could remain in the country. The obvious answers were 1) it's unethical, IMHO, and 2) I wouldn't have a work permit while waiting for the visa. If they jack us around much more though I'll be talking to the State Dept. about getting her here. I find it rather pathetic that UDI requires a wedding date, and even a statement from the person conducting the wedding, when submitting the visa application, but will so casually and thoroughly disrupt the wedding they require be already planned, and be so languid in resolving a mistake that was theirs to begin. The person who told Lene we should've just gotten married and applied for a family reunion visa even agreed with her objection that we wanted to do the right thing--yet we're seemingly being penalized for it. It's a bit ironic that I've so often argued against this sort of thing being done to would be American immigrants and am now experiencing it myself.
