Seeing as I'm not American, I was hoping someone could answer this question for me, as I'm a little confused.
Is American Memorial Day only for American soldiers, or the soldiers and their allies? I only ask because on CNN this week I saw a little Memorial thing for all the Americans and the Allies who fell in Afghanistan and Iraq. It confused me as to whether the day was actually just for American service personnel or for Allied as well.

Veterans Day began as a day to commemorate soldiers, both slain and survivors, in the Great War; that's why it's on 11 November. Memorial Day began as a commemoration of soldiers lost in the US Civil War. Obviously, subsequent wars expanded the realm of both holidays, and, as others have noted, there's no reason NOT to honor allied soldiers who fought and died alongside US servicemen, but to the extent either holiday could be considered exclusively American Memorial Day would seem to be the one.
