it's more than just showing dissatisfaction moondog Send a noteboard - 26/05/2010 07:43:31 AM
If a third party gets an enormous amount of the vote, it's cause for concern among the two major parties.

Again, wouldn't the better way be to not vote, period?

if enough people vote for a 3rd party, they may attain permanent ballot status in most states. some states make it easier for 3rd parties to make the ballot, but in all cases, the state wants to see that the party makes a specific, quantifiable showing in the election.

yes, the overall effect of 3rd parties in the US is that the two major parties absorb the popular positions of those parties in order to maintain their stranglehold on the public discourse. but voting for a 3rd party candidate -- especially at the state and local level -- is never a wasted vote, simply because of the ballot status laws in each state. if you want to see more competitive races, you should vote for 3rd parties when you can. as 3rd party activists are always fond of saying: if you vote for the lesser of two evils, you're still getting evil ;)
