It makes me wonder about the common advice to get a desktop instead of a laptop because they are upgradeable. Granted, I could upgrade my desktop now; but I never needed to before; and at this point it seems like I might as cheaply get a new or recent computer anyway. I guess the advice only applies to gamers or something.
Yeah, you're not going to be able to upgrade for as little $$ as you could spend on the cheapest Dell/HP. But if you want something a bit better than that, you can probably save money building one from scratch than paying the retail prices that Dell/HP charge for the pricier components. And it would be easier to upgrade in the future since you won't have to deal with proprietary components, like power supplies, motherboards, etc.
