While I understand this idea that minimalists are better because they cosume less, etc... I think we can live sustainable lives while also owning more than a the bare essentials and a multitool.

I get his ideas about gadgets. I live that way a bit, but not totally- I have a tv. But I don't have cable or satellite. We have a new tv because my old one bit the dust, and it's really nice. I kept feeling guilt about this new fancy tv but screw that, I don't feel guilty anymore. I have been tempted many times to buy a dish. On the other hand, I'm tempted to ditch the tv altogether. I know I could never do it.

I also have more tools than I'm sure he'd approve of, but that's because we actually build stuff ourselves.

I wonder if this guy has a car, and if so what does he drive? If he buys yogurt, does he buy it in individual containers or a big tub or what? Perhaps he makes his own at home. I wonder where he buys his food and whether or not he has solar panels. Does he clean with chlorine bleach and compost his kitchen scraps?

I agree with him that our society is a bit too materialistic. I also agree that with fewer wants the world would end up with less waste and pollution because we wouldn't be wasting energy to produce all this stuff in the first place, etc.

However, I am not going to feel guilty about wanting my grandmother's furniture, old photo albums or keeping my wedding dress. And I want an mp3 player. and a new car.

I guess that's just old-fashioned and unsustainable of me.
