Split-quoting different fonts

In response to Elaine's post, where she changed the font to Garamond using html tags.
Due to the way Elaine wrote the html with line breaks, the split-quote puts it into three seperate boxes where two of those boxes contain nothing. Is it possible to make it so that split-quoting transfers html tags through each block and ignores irrelevant lines such as above.
