The planet was central to the story to the point that it shaped the story but I don't think that means it was an ecological story. With Dune ecology in the sense of human’s effect on the environment was at best a minor theme and even then you don't really see it until the third book.

Sorry but in MHO if you read Dune and see a story about ecology you are projecting. I know it is an old argument and has some weight in literary circle but I think they are wrong and missed the cenral themes of the story.
