Have you tried capsaicin around the containers to ward them off?
From the name it's something capsicum (ie: hot peppers)-based?
It's the pure ingredient in pepper sauces. Apparently birds and seeds don't detect it, but mammals react to it, sometimes violently.
That'd be a loss of time. My squirrels have eaten last summer everything from shishito to japaleno and even habanero - so anything capsicum obviously doesn't work with them as it sometime, apparently rarely, does with some types of squirrels.
Mutant squirrels?
I tried blood meal which doubles up as a fertilizer and that rodents normally hate (works well enough for mice etc.), but it appears they're not put off one bit by blood either.
Hrmm...could just capitulate and leave a plate of almonds out every so often...
Anyway.... the squirrels aren't squeamish about how cruel life is. They understand perfectly that it's a fight for food and territory and they want mine, and I'm sure they expect me to fight back as in my place they would. They just don't get yet that humans are slow, can't chase after them up beams and don't look all that dangerous, but when they're pissed off they fight dirty.
Ha! Ever seen that video where a squirrel attacks a deer?
They're not nice easily frightened squirrels either. They're big and ugly, and one nearly attacked me last year.
Rabid! Maybe one of the ones Dunja uses to threaten me?
I was under the impression you hated them too, though...
No, I've always enjoyed watching them play and feed in the yard. Too bad I have little experience with city squirrels, though. Maybe they just learned their rude manners from some of the local humans?
