That or anything doing with the Sea Peoples, the environmentalism of the Minoan civilization on Crete and Thera, the origins of the Basques, the Dacians, and the great migrations of 200-900 CE. Each of those would be great topics that would give you plenty of leeway and would be relatively untouched by others doing such topics.
I remember writing about the English occupation of Alexandria in 1882 as a sign that economic, "dollar diplomacy" style imperialism was more important to understanding the "Scramble for Africa" than any sort of nationalistic form of imperialism. Fun days, learning how to do secondary source research like that for the first real time.
