Alright, I'm about half way through Dust of Dreams, and it struck me that I haven't been able to figure out the overall story of the Malazan series. Maybe it's just me, and I'm thinking there's something more complex going on than there really is, but could someone help me out on this? Is it just the story of Laseen's reign as Empress?
I took a break a while ago halfway through Midnight Tides, and have recently begun contemplating resuming the series (spurred on mainly by my giving up buying new books for Lent), but IIRC DoD is the latest book, is it not? And still no discernible overall plot?
Indeed it is. The plot, like Legolas said, could revolve around the fight against the Crippled God, and DoD is more than hinting that it will happen in a very bloody, horrifying way in the not-so-distant future.
Also, I recommend picking it up again. The books ahead of you are all very good, and Toll the Hounds has (I feel) a fantastic, unexpected and most of all exciting ending.

If you're not even remotely interested by the end of book two, give up.
