Unfortunately it was my first ever fantasy book, so I had no basis in comparison. Shamed to say, I thought it was pretty good then. But since going on to read other books, I can say that Inheritance is mediocre at best.
Everyone needs an entry point, and we can't all get hooked by that metaphorical brilliant classic. Eragon is an okay primer into the fantasy reading world. Yes, there are a lot of better works, but you'll get to find them because of the interest that Eragon helped you find.
My first fantasy novel that I read was The Hobbit, which was required reading in a 5th grade Reading class. (My parents read Narnia to me when i was younger, but I don't count that.) My next read was The Belgariad by David Eddings which I loved at the time. It's a nice light read but it helped stoke my interest in the genre.
Weirdly, my first fantasy novel was the Hobbit when i was in the 5th grade too. I then went onto read the first Harry Potter book (it was released that same year) while reading the LoToR series and reading the Harry Potter series as they were released. Ended up getting the Eye of the World for Christmas in the 7th grade and have been hooked since.
