The 2nd and 3rd books are significantly, IMO, better than the dull first one, and cover interesting issues and ideas with reasonably intersting characters.
I'm also going to put forward Gregory Maguire - Wicked and Son of a Witch and Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister are all underrated books.
