Maybe ebooks will go down a compromise route similar to buying a CD and copying it to your MP3 - you bike the book and are able to download a digital version (for free or a reduced price as you have already bought a copy)

This is really good. I wonder if it's sustainable, though. Probably. It would be a very effective way of getting people to switch to eBooks, I bet.
