I think that as far as the environmental impact is concerned, things will be slowly changing. For better or for worse, ebooks are really taking off, and will continue to do so for some time. This will reduce the amount of paper used, but could potentially reduce the author's salary as well. I like the idea of tipping the author, but when I really like an author's work, I just buy the book from the store, hoping that he gets better sales numbers. I also do my part by reviewing the book and trying to spread the word to get others into it.
