This is my take too. Plus my sister who didn't read them thinks the series is rather original for TV

There's little comparison between the two, besides that the series is a cheesily enjoyable action/adventure story in the same general family as Xena and Hercules.
It's no House or Dexter or Lost, but it's good in its niche. The TV equivalent of a popcorn flick. My sister loves the show, watches it religiously and claims that the characters and their behavior is much better than the usual cliches of TV.
