As I said, the second book is better in some regards thanks to that.

If it was written by anyone else. Even me. And I stink at writing full books.
I've only read the first book, but I could not continue. While Bella's original character may be as you describe, her relationship and obsession with Edward is shallow, weak and all together an example of what I would never want to see a friend fallen into. If there was ever someone who treated my friend like Edward treats Bella, I would beat him with a club. If I ever had a friend put up with what Bella puts up with, I would beat them too (but with a foam club. just got make a point). Bella's character is a shallow mockery of the potential her character and their "relationship" had.
The writing itself was horrid. The plot and characters were abandoned to the one-dimensional fawning mind of the author.
Given those same characters and plot and then put into the hands of a different author, the Twilight series could actually have been worth some hype.
Instead, it is a pale shadow, riding on the backs of the ignorance and shallow fawning of today's youth. I pray it meets the same fate of the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys.

The less you see of Edward, the better the book gets. But yeah, I agree about the "one-dimensional fawning mind" which ruins the potential, which is a shame. I think I made clear I think it's not worth the hype, but then, controversy feeds hypes, always does, so in a way those things that most bother you fuel the hype.
About today's youth being shallow, I think there's something to be said for the viewpoint that reading, even bad books, is important. Much like Harry Potter got kids who don't normally read at all to read, and perhaps got some of them to move on to LotR or other higher-level books, Twilight motivates people who wouldn't otherwise read books to do so, and perhaps some of those will stick with it. I mean, as far as stupid teenager hypes go, better to be a Twilight (the books, anyway) fan than a Jonas Brothers or Hannah Montana one, I should think.
As I don't believe we've actually had a review of this yet... Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series.

Well, there are a few books she explicitly references and cites as inspiration.

Yeah. It's one of those things that sound worse out of context than they are in the book itself...
