I did not react to how he was at all.
Edit:
I was a bit short maybe... I have not seen the movie, but from what you write I would say they have changed the boy alot. He does not sound retarded, or babied in any way. Of course the father tries to shelter him from a world that is beyond hard, but there is no way he could be babied in it.
And yes, he does understand the dangers.
If I where you I would give the book a chance.

So is the child in the book as unrealistic as the one in the movie?

I drove eight hours through the back roads of Washington state while listening to that audiobook.

How odd. A new friend was just telling me about this story. I didn't remember the title
