Eddings is best, IMO, for young teens (or from the age of 10 or so).
But Magician is a good introduction because it's a) fairly typical fantasy, and b) closer to a "novel" than most.

Oh, I love Eddings even as an adult. I re-read the entire 12 book cycle every couple of years.
