Pratchett took a while to mature as a writer. Werthead Send a noteboard - 13/01/2010 07:56:05 PM
I've read the early ones, and gave up. They weren't bad, but I couldn't understand why they were so popular. If the series gets better as it continues, I may pick them up again.

His early pre-DISCWORLD novels aren't that great either, and it wasn't until he had to deliver two novels a year every year with the DISCWORLD series that you saw him improving as a writer, almost book-by-book. The leap in quality between THE COLOUR OF MAGIC and GUARDS! GUARDS! (the eighth book, published five years later) is quite remarkable.
