He hasn't written anything outstanding in many, many years.
But you are right. Nothing OUTSTANDING since The Green Mile. A few better than average books, but nothing like he was churning out in the 80's and early 90's.
It, Salem's Lot, and The Shining were literally scary and yet I couldn't put any of them down. I remember how weird and yet intriguing Tommyknockers was. Even the book where Satan was the owner of the shop was an excellent read. And what can I say about The Stand? Misery? That one was actually about his cocaine addiction according to an interview I read.
Seriously, Stephen King kept me company when I was a teen in a troubled home. But, I really can't read anything by him anymore and haven't been able to in years. Too bad really.
I have been clinging on to the past and the writer he once was, but I readily admit that you are right and his most recent work has been mediocre at best. He may be a more polished wordsmith now, but his storytelling skills have taken a hit over the past decade of clean living.
Still, that is what re-reads are all about! Pick up The Shining again soon, I bet it still scares you.

He has never been the same since 1) getting off drugs and 2) getting hit by the car.

I think the drug issue had more to do with it than the car.

All of this is very disheartening considering the recent New Dark Tower Book announcement.
