and this is only a kinda-example, but I think the development of Snape's character throughout Harry Potter hands down has to be one of the best "is he evil or not?" characters I've encountered in a while. Not the exact same scenario, but the reason it worked is the same. It was well performed and you were never truly caught "off guard" (as in, there were little hints all along as to what his true allegiance was and his motivations for them).
