Or the Hero stays the same and the world changes their perception to where they see him as the villain?
A good example of this specific change, is in Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card.
Ender was the hero in the Ender's Game book, but a few thousand years later he is viewed as a villain by the people of that time period.
