Meaning, if I were suddenly snatched up and carried off to Germany I could get by with basic conversation. I also can recite several poems, not that it's ANY help whatsoever. Pretty sure Germans would just blink in surprise at some crazy American giving them an impromptu rendition of "Die Lorelei."

ME:
"Guten tag! *ahem*
Ich weiss nicht,
Was soll es bedeuten,
Das ich so traurig bin,
Ein Marchen aus alten Zeiten
Das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn!"
GERMAN CITIZEN:
*blink* Entschuldigung?

If you learn Spanish, it won't be that hard to learn Portugese and Italian *NM*

I'm neither of those things in your title, but I'll put in another vote for Spanish.
