That said, German could be fun. I also spent some time in South Africa, and learned some Afrikans, which I'm told is closely related to German.
Though as I understand there is also a decent number of South-Africans with actually German roots, and a couple of them might still speak it. But Afrikaans is largely mutually intelligible with Dutch, and not really with German.
Many Afrikaners I spoke with said that they had no trouble at all understanding spoken and written German, and were able to alter their Afrikans quickly to make themselves understood.
The people I stayed with had family who had moved to Berlin, and they were back visiting, so I was regaled with quite a bit of discussion on Germany, the German language, and how that country in particular (and Europe in general) is far superior to any country in Africa.
I was Phelix on wotmania, I will always be Phelix in the "real" world, and now I am Phelix on RAFO.

I vote German. It's the closest that I I come to "speaking" another language.

I'm neither of those things in your title, but I'll put in another vote for Spanish.

We all have our own prejudices for suggesting languages. Of the three, I suggest French.
