Can anyone enlighten me on the appeal of the sword of shannara series? I have read 6 of them, painstakingly, hoping I could enjoy them, but to no avail. The overall story arc seems like it should be interesting, but the writing seems to fall flat and fails to capture me completely. Am I missing something? the series seems very well liked, and I enjoy almost any fantasy novels I read, but this series just can't engage me.
I am just interested in the opinions of others, and most here seem pretty well-read.
Do you like the series? What about it? If, like me, you like the idea of the story arc but not the execution, why do you think it falls flat?

After that I tried Elfestones, but I couldn't get into it. I haven't been back to the series since my second try with Elfstones. That was about 3 years ago. If I'm not gonna read 'em I should take them to the used bookstore and get store credit for them I suppose.
Kirk: Spock, you want to know something? Everybody’s human.
Spock: I find that remark…insulting.

They were written thirty years ago, when different standards prevailed. Oh, and for younger readers.

As others have mentioned, they were okay for their time period. Word and Void is a decent series. *NM*
