For me, it isnt scary. It does mess with your head so you may not want to read it at night, but I didn't find it scary.
Also, the artist Poe is the author's sister I think and her Album Hunted kind of goes with the book. You might be able to find some of the songs or the album at your library or something.
I tried that... it makes it more interesting in a way.
