Most classic are hard to read and don't seem as good when they are looked at years later. A lot of people find LOTR unreadable and honestly by today’s standards it is a very poorly written book with name that are unpronounceable.
I think one of the first things you have to do to read and enjoy Dune is understand that it isn't the typical scifi book but is actually a politcal book about religion, oil and limits of power. The next thing is not to get hung up on the names.
The story starts off oddly and you doesn't explain much but if you get far enough it does start to make more sense.
Like any classic read it for what it represents and how it changed writing but keep in mind it is a 40+ year old science fiction book, it is going to be dated.
If you are reading it simply for pleasure and you don't enjoy move on to soemthing you do enjoy.

I've tried twice and haven't been able to make it past the first 80 pages or so.

For those answering this thread - Did you find the characters disgusting, arrogant and unlikeable?

If you've read WOT, you'll know what Rand is like. Paul Atreides is like Rand x 10^5 in arrogance *NM*
