What Tolkien thought he did and what he actually did does not necessarily have to be the same thing. I think the need for escapism, as you call it, is precisely a result of the experience of the first world war (and to a lesser extent modernity). Whether allegory plays into it is another question altogether.


Any escapism written in harsh times cannot but comment, in some fashion, on the events in which they were concieved.


Yes, but defining it as escapism is an oversimplification.
It equates it with Mills and Boon, which is not the same at all.
