And they are most positively my favorite of the Riftwar books. And definitely the best written.
I really should read some of her solo stuff.

I'm kind of surprised that so few people have heard of these books, let alone read them. I suggest that you take a chance on them. Yes, there are lots of books, no, they're not finished yet, but they're kind of dense so by the time you've got through the first 3 arcs then there'll be another to read. She's got three books left to do, and they are at least planned! Wikipedia article about it all.
I think this is my favourite fantasy series. The language is lovely, the characters well written and complex, and the story is interesting.
Some of the usual suspects in Fantasy writing make an appearance: the dottery old sorceror, the good sorceror gone bad, dragons, clansmen, pretty princesses and dashing princes. But there's so much more to the books than that, and there are quite a few nice innovations.
Give them a try. I dare you.

Death to the Regressives of the GOP and the TeaParty. No mercy for Conservatives. Burn them all at the stake for the hateful satanists they are.
The Wars of Light and Shadow ~ Janny Wurts. You should read them, truly.

I much prefered her Cycle of Fire trilogy. It had sorcery, spaceships, and aliens.
