I've read all the books, except for A Touch of Dead, and I like them much better than the HBO series.
True Blood is enjoyable, but the second season seemed to move into the territory of "being gratuitous for the sake of being gratuitous." For example, once you've seen one deity-induced orgy, you've seen them all. I don't need to see them almost every episode for the second half of the season. It seemed to be all about the shock-factor.
Also, I understand the need for changes, and expanded PoVs, but Tara's character on the show annoys me to no end
