So, on the basis that we are better anyway, I will be recommending Laura Ingalls Wilder, Lucy Maud Montgomery and similar, to be followed by Austen and Bronte. Then they can read whatever they like. Oooh, and Roald Dahl. And Philippa Pearce. OK, the list is very very long.

I actually have all the Montgomery books from Gutenberg on my work PC for when it all gets too unbearably horrible. Instant elsewhere-ness with a spot of soul soothing.
