Lacking proper funds, I will occasionally go for the trade over hardcover and sometimes it works out better. I will gleefully purchase one of Erikson's Tomes in paperback over hardcover because it is just a bit easier to read. Sometimes there are books you just have to have in hardcover though (Zafon's The Shadow of the Wind is an example of one) and I will happily spend extra for them.

I was thinking of Erikson's books too. I have only read the first four in tradepaper (I never knew the term before) and one reason I haven't pursued the fifth book is because I haven't stumbled on it yet in that format in the stores. I could order it but I don't order much Online. Still, I refuse to buy it in traditional small paperback, too many pages and too small print.
But wine was the great assassin of both tradition and propriety...
