I consider LAMENTATION to do two things well. It's very good for a first novel, especially a first in a planned 5 book epic series. Secondly, it's a very good table setter for the story that really gets started in CANTICLE.
I do plan on spending a little time discussing the difference between the two novels, Scholes growth as a writer, and the development of the deeper plot.

Nice. The immediate connection I made was to Jerusalem and the Jewish Diaspora.

So far, the second book is better than the first.
