This must be my third of fourth time trying to read Dune. My best result this far has been the part where the kid who ought to ripped apart piece by piece for being so disgusting, and the only tolerable character in the book are left to the desert. (Paul and Jessica, I think they're called).(/quote>

i am so hearing you there. yeah.

1. How the hell can you like Dune? It's supposed to be, like, a masterpiece, after all. More like a piece of crap.

hahahahaha

2. How can one tolerate the characters? They're inhuman and arrogant (so, so arrogant!) and just plain disgusting. My favourite characters are the Harkonnens :D

the characters did make me want to vomit half the time.

3. How do you pronounce Kwisatz Haderach? I say it like it was Germany (well, more like if it were Finnish, but that wouldn't tell much)

i think it's based on hebrew, which would make it sorta similar to how you might pronounce it if you were german, but finnish doesn't sound at all like german.

4. WHAT do words like faufreluches (which I guess isn't English), quasi-fief, fief-complete, hodded, baliset, gestalten etcetcetc... mean?

"glossary" is another cool word.... half of those actually aren't english, anyway, so yeah.... i dunno. scifi/fantasy and sf authors are pretty notorious for making up their own words. i just go with context and move on. sometimes it gets idiotic and i just skim the book or quit reading it.

Don't answer that :D I like the language of the book, though. Shows how much English there still is for me to learn. But it's hard!

any time you try and learn a new language it's not easy... even if it's a language within your own, like the crap psychologists use to write papers within their field. blech.
